On Monday April 24, 2023, the High court in Kampala lead by Judge, Margret Mutonyi ordered the release of Abubakar Kalungi who has been on trial for the murder of senior Police officer Muhammad Kirumira with Her ruling that they was no conclusive evidence linking Kalungi to the gruesome murder.  

Kalungi was arrested from his home located at Ndejje Lubugumu on allegations that he stalked Kirumira and eventually shot at him to death on orders of Abdul Kateregga (deceased) who was a resident of Namungoona in Rubaga Division. It is said Kalungi worked along with men who arrived on motor cycles (Boda bodas) and that they were the very men who shot at the tires of Kirumira’s vehicle.   

Since the rest persons attached to the murder were released, Kirumira’s father Kawooya Mwebe had hopes high that court will ultimately find the truth behind son’s death. And that since Abubakar was the last key suspect in the son’s murder he thought justice got derived.

Kawooya who was also in court during the court’s ruling admits that Abubakar Kalungi did not kill his son. He however says the actual killers are still there and living on large;

“I agree with what the judge ruled, Kalungi si ye yatta mutabani wange. Abaamutta bakyaliyo (Kalungi did not kill my son. The killers are still living on). It’s now five years and the case has failed police,” Kirumira’s father noted in anguish.

The late Kirumira came to lime light after his exposure of fellow officers who dealt with criminals the time he was still the commander of Nasana Police station. During his time of death he was the acting DPC of Buyende.

Kirumira was killed on the 28, September, 2018 near his Bulenga home in his vehicle along with Resty Mbabazi Nnalinya a colleague he came with from a function. Both were shot and died on spot.
