Situation in Lwengo district seems a death trap. This has come after most areas facing dry spells amid rain seasons with local government leaders and chiefs questioning what went wrong.
Locals say for weeks now they haven’t seen any rains. They add that all the Wells have dried up and are now drinking from swamps and ponds with the cattle. They again say they’re in fear of facing various deadly diseases like diarrhea if serious actions are not considered.
“Our lives are in great danger. We’re puzzled where to go and what to do there’s totally no water here! We drink from the swamps where the cattle feed, we’re wandering. We’re going to face diseases yet medics are also limited in hospitals. We need help,” states James Mulwanya an area local (Katovu).
Worse still, pupils during lunch breaks after failing to get safe water from stalled boreholes they instead seek it from dirty wells and swamps cause swamps are the only places where water can be got. With this, parents and guardians say they might lose their beloved kids in pursuit of drinking water.
“Some could even drown in these swamps. They search for safe water but no way, they instead resort to these swamps where cattle and pigs feed also; see!” relates Mulwanya.
The Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga was also in shock after discovering that residents in this area grapple with access to safe drinking water.
Leaders at the district say the situation has failed them; citing government to intervene. The government of Uganda is however yet to respond.
