Visiting Uganda’s game parks is pretty amazing. The ‘askari’ (guard) fully armed with a gun is an assurance that security is guaranteed. A firepit will also be burning through the night to scare off lions that could encroach the compound. A tourist and his campsite watched throughout the night with also a guard under intensive surveillances.
The evenings always begin with a BBQ dinner crossed with conversations from fellow campers thru the wee hours of the nights. The Hyenas that also cross the border from the other side of Democratic Republic of The Congo (DRC) also create songs that perform bushy rhymes that could intensify the breathing of your lungs.
The hippos and crocs make hoofing sounds paradoxically not good for the kid.
Dennis Mugumya, a park operator attached to Queen Elizabeth National Park reveals that in the nights the most dangerous mammal to watch for are not reptiles but the elephants. The elephants since they move in straight lines so they tend to bump anything they could meet along the way;
“These creatures are the most sensitive ones to watch for in the nights. Especially when visiting the toilet in the game park,” notes Mugumya.
He adds, even when sleeping in tents; cautioned should be taken cause the elephants can also easily attack the camping tents on their locomotion and one could be injured.
Mugumya also cautions about holding a flashlight besides your bed and in hand when taking a night walk out in the campsite. Adding that, if possible, a fire flame could also be a million dollar move to safely take a night walk. With the fire flame easily scares off the lions and leopards that take fresh as their one survival.
In the park still, one has to sleep with ears outside. The sound rave of nature outside itself can’t let you sleep like a baby. Heart keeps pounding, overflowing with an appreciation of nature and new sense of respect for the creatures grooving outside your tent. Piercing roars could shatter the silence of the night since lions locomote all the night over.
Nevertheless, the best equipment to carry with you at the Murchison Park in the night is the flashlight and the sense of adventure. This easily helps you to venture into the depths of the park. Under the cover of night, the night air is always alive. The moonlight cast an eerie glow over the trees, giving them an unnerving and mysterious appearance; hence a super adventure never before.
A night experience in Uganda’s game parks, like Kidepo is a night one would never forget. It’s a one night that could stay with you forever always carried with wonder, fear and an unshakeable sense of amazement with the reminders of power and grandeur of nature that surround you in the nights. This can also leave you with a deep connection to the wild beauty of the park with a different sense of gratitude.
